Flanders & The Somme 2016
Battlefield Tour
Between Sunday the 14th and
Friday the 19th of February
2016, SYG organised a 1st World War Battlefield Tour to Flanders and the
Somme, to research the 16th Highland Light Infantry (The Boys' Brigade
Battalion); BB, GB and Amicus members, travelled in two minibuses to various locations in
Flanders and the Somme areas,
staying in Ypres next to the Menin Gate, and also at schools type
accommodation in Albert, France. Members, and
leaders experienced walking across the battlefields, visiting cemeteries
along the route. They also visited Aulthuille Church, the Thiepval
Memorial, Vimy Ridge (Canadian Memorial), and other locations. There was also an
opportunity for shopping in Ypres. The Tour finished with our Buglers
playing Last Post at the Vimy Ridge Memorial before getting the ferry home.
As a result of the year long project the group produced a first class book and a
DVD. Also the group presented its findings at the local royal British
legion, St Marys church, Sawston and at BB HQ at Felden lodge, Hemel Hempstead.
Also at the Mary Challis museum. The findings have been widely appreciated and
widely viewed. The book and DVD are available today by contacting our
chairman and the DVD will soon be available in YouTube.
Our thanks to the heritage lottery for funding this project.
