April 2006 DEA Gold Trial in
the Peak District
• Going for Gold!
At Easter we ran a very successful Duke of
Edinburgh's Award Expedition Gold Trial in the Peak District.
Adam Telfer, Phil Crouch and Robert Chaplin have just successfully completed a
Gold "practice"
expedition in the Dark Peak Area of Derbyshire.
This entails planning and travelling a route in wild country over 4 days. The
route was approx 50
miles in length and the group had to carry everything - food, fuel, clothes,
tents, cookers, etc, etc.
It was a challenging route and involved climbing the 3 main peaks in the area -
Black Hill, Bleaklow
and Kinder scout (twice).
A few lessons were learned, but on the whole the
group performed excellently with solid navigation
and superb team spirit. The weather started off wet, but improved over the
four days and the
expedition finished in bright sunshine.
The group will (hopefully) go on to a Gold
Assessment at the end of August on Dartmoor.
